Seedance 4K searches exploded this month, and most of the pages answering them get the basic fact wrong. The common claim is that 4K arrives with Seedance 2.5. The documented reality is closer to the opposite: 4K output is already listed for the current Seedance 2.0 generation in Volcano Engine's own model documentation[1], while ByteDance has not published any resolution ceiling for 2.5 at all[3].
That distinction matters if you are deciding where to render high-resolution work today rather than after the next launch. Here is what is documented, what is available on this platform right now, and an honest take on when 4K is worth paying for.
Where Seedance 4K support officially stands
Seedance 2.0: documented. Volcano Ark's model list for the Doubao Seedance 2.0 series specifies output at 480p, 720p, 1080p, and 4K[1], and the Ark pricing documentation carries the 2.0 series as the current generation[2]. In other words, 4K is a shipped capability of the model generation that launched back in February 2026[4], not a future promise.
Seedance 2.5: unpublished. The official 2.5 promotion page leads with 30-second narrative generation and expanded multimodal references; it says nothing about resolution[3]. Sites listing "Seedance 2.5 4K" as a confirmed spec are extrapolating. The model itself has not reached general availability, which we track in detail in our Seedance 2.5 release date coverage.
Fast and Mini variants: capped lower. Across the ecosystem, the speed-optimized variants trade resolution for cost and latency. On this platform that shows up concretely: Fast generation tops out at 720p, and the Mini tier runs at 480p and 720p.
What runs at 4K on seedance2.so today
On this platform, 4K video output is available on the Portrait tier, the standard-quality track built for realistic human subjects. When you select it in the studio, the resolution menu runs 480p, 720p, 1080p, and 4K, and the credit cost per second scales with the resolution you pick; current rates are always visible in the generator and on the pricing page before you commit a generation.
Two practical notes from running it. First, 4K multiplies file size and render time along with pixel count, so the workflow that works is drafting at 720p until the prompt is right, then re-running the approved prompt at 4K. Iterating at 4K is the most expensive way to discover your camera direction was wrong; the prompt formula approach of changing one slot at a time keeps those expensive re-runs to a minimum. Second, upscaled 1080p and native 4K are not the same thing on fine texture, hair, fabric weave, and small on-screen text, which is exactly where realistic human subjects live, and why the 4K option sits on the Portrait tier.

Two consequences fall out of this table. First, if your work needs 1080p or above, it needs the Portrait tier, full stop; no amount of settings-hunting surfaces 4K on the other tracks. Second, the split is actually convenient for the draft-then-finish workflow: iterate cheaply on Standard or Fast at 720p, and move the finished prompt to Portrait only for the final high-resolution pass. The prompt itself transfers unchanged.

When 4K is worth the credits, and when it is dead money
4K earns its cost in three situations. You are cropping or reframing in post: a 4K master lets you punch in to a 1080p crop without quality loss, which effectively gives you multiple shots from one generation. The useful way to think about Seedance 4K is not "which version has it" but "which shots deserve it". The capability is documented on the current 2.0 generation[1], it is live on this platform's Portrait tier today, and the 2.5 question remains open until ByteDance publishes real numbers. Pick 4K for crops, stills, and UHD deliverables; pick 1080p and more takes for everything else. If you want to test the difference on your own subject, run the same prompt at both resolutions in the studio and look at hair, fabric, and text, because that is where Seedance 4K either pays for itself or does not.
